I Am Your Ferret

I am your ferret, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear. I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The gray hairs are beginning to appear.

You smile at me; I see love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a simple moment of your time? That is all I ask.

To slow down, if even for a few minutes to be with me. So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen, of others of my kind, passing.

Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly, sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat. Sometimes, we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run free in a distant land.

I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week. Someday you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just "One more day" with me. Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me. We have NOW, together.

So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart.

Come to me not as "alpha" or as "trainer" or even "Mom or Dad," come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another's eyes, and talk.

I may tell you something about the fun of running through tunnels, or I may tell you something profound about myself, or even life in general. You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such things with. Someone very different from you, and here I am.

I am a ferret, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls. I do not think of you as a "Ferret on two feet" -- I know what you are. You are human, in all your quirkiness, and I love you still.

Now, come sit with me, on the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow down if only for 15 minutes. Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears. Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self. We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short. -- Love, (on behalf of ferrets everywhere)

A Day And A Life With Fuzzies

The sun's not up - what's that sound? It's surely not time to rise. I glance across the bedroom And I find five* ferret eyes.

"C'mon, mom, please let us out! There's much fun to be had! We won't disturb you! Won't make much noise! We surely won't be bad!"

I stumble 'cross the room And release them from their cell Oh no, no - what have I done? It's early morning hell!

They thrash about They dook and hiss across my sleeping spot Oh man it surely seems That sleeping in I'm not!

Then one by one they jump From the bed onto the floor Seconds flat they've made it Right out the bedroom door

"Ahh" I think to myself As I settle back in bed But as I drift off Eddy's back And he's jumped upon my head

SCRITCH SCRITCH SCRITCH This horrible sound comes from the other room Oh not the aluminum ferret tube! Please release me from this doom!

I crawl out of bed and open up A container full of snacks Surely giving them some special treat Will keep them from attack

But minutes later sugar charged weasels Come flying into bed Oh geez why didn't I give them Ferretone instead?

Sidewards jerking to and fro They dance about my chest Oh please, my little furry boys, Just let your mother rest!

Somehow I managed to find some sleep Another hour in the sack Now late for work I quickly Throw some clothes upon my back.

Gathering ferrets one by one The time just ticks away I don't think they want their mom To go to work today.

Heading home tired from work I'm thinking 'bout the boys Stop by the store and sink Another $50 on food and toys.

Thus is life with ferrets Those little hyper balls of love But I would never change it Not for all the stars above.

A Trip Across The Sea

If I had to pick but one thing To take across the sea I think I'd pick a ferret To go along with me

A ferret is more precious Than any other thing They can make you feel complete And get your soul to sing

And when that ferret and I Set sail across that sea We'll fear no squall nor storm Together strong we'll be

A ferret is more grounding Than an anchor or a rope He can make you safe, secure And fill your heart with hope

When I've crossed that sprawling sea And stepped out on new land I will not be a stranger there I'll have my ferret in hand

A ferret is more rewarding Than the treasures of that sea It can give you wealth through love Your spirit rich and free

If I had to pick but one thing To take across the sea I know I'd pick a Ferret To go along with me Across the sea

What a ferret owner sees, when cloud watching.

Cloud Ferrets

Up in the sky I saw them. Looking of cotton, and rose petal white. Fluffy center, dark edged gem. Floating and sailing feather light.

Wondering where their meandering began. What sent them here to thrill my eyes? Playing in a turquoise sky catch as catch can. Flitting about like furry butterflies.

Streaming shafts of sunshine. Highlighting an incredible sight. Wishing they'd dance closer and be mine. Cloud ferrets on a wind blown flight.

I Adopted Your Ferret Today

I adopted your ferret today. The one you left at the pound. The one you had for five years And no longer wanted around.

I adopted your ferret today. Do you know he's lost weight? Do you know he's scared and depressed And has lost all faith?

I adopted your ferret today. He had fleas and a cold, But don't worry none. You've unburdened your load.

I adopted your ferret today. Were you having a baby or moving away? Did you suddenly develop allergies Or was there no reason he couldn't stay?

I adopted your ferret today. He doesn't play or eat much. He's very depressed, But he will learn again to trust.

I adopted your ferret today And here he will stay. He's found his forever home And a warm bed to lay.

I adopted your ferret today And I will give him all that he could need. Patience, love, security, and understanding. Hopefully he will forget your selfish deed.

A Rescue Animal's Christmas Poem

'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town, every shelter is full - we are lost but not found, Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare, we hope every minute that someone will care, They'll come to adopt us and give us the call, "Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!! But now we sit here and think of the days we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways. Once we were little, then we grew and we grew, now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.

So out the back door we were thrown like the trash, they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash? We "jump on the children:, "don't come when they call", we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall. We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed, now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made. If only they'd trained us, if only we knew, we'd have done what they asked us and worshipped them, too. We were left in the backyard, or worse - left to roam, now we're tired and lonely and out of a home. They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye, "Maybe someone else will give you a try."

So now here we are, all confused and alone, in a shelter with others who long for a home. The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat, with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat, They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer, we know that they wonder how long we'll be here. We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads, of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds. Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears, our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn, could you help with the bills and fill our food bin? We count on your kindness each day of the year, can you give more than hope to everyone here? Please make a donation to pay for the heat and help get us something special to eat. The shelter that cares for us wants us to live, and more of us will, if more people will give.

10 Commandments for a Responsible Ferret Guardian

1. My life is likely to last 5-10 years, any separation from you will be painful. When you decide to make me part of your life, let it be forever. If at some time in our lives you cannot keep me, make sure that my new home will provide what I need and will supply the love, care and socialization I crave.

2. Let me teach you to understand me and what I need from you. I will test you from time to time to make sure you remember the lessons.

3. Keep me safe and secure. Protect me from others that would harm me. I depend on you. You are my lifeline.

4. Talk to me and cuddle me. Your voice is as enjoyable to my ears as birds sweetly singing are to yours. Your gentle touch is as warm as the soft rays of the sun.

5. I need fresh nutritional food and fresh water, warm clean blankets to cuddle in during winter, cool clean blankets to lay on in the heat of the summer. My litter box and cage should be cleaned daily. Hugs and social time each and every day. Do not put me in a cage outside. I belong inside with my family.

6. I will make many mistakes. I am not perfect. Be gentle when you correct.

7. Don't get angry at me. I am an intelligent, joyous, curious creature and WILL get into things. Know that this is how I am. I am not trying to be destructive. I depend on you to watch out for me and protect me from danger.

8. Never hit me or shake me. I am small and can be hurt very easily. When you are angry at someone or something else, do not take it out on me. I have nothing to give you but love and joy. This is my true nature.

9. Take special care of me as I grow older. I may play less but I still love you just as much as hen I was young enough to dance. Monitor me closely for I will experience ailments as I grow older.

10. When I can no longer enjoy life and am in pain with no relief, please stay with me till the end. I have given you my life and my love. Don't disappoint me in my last moments here on this earth. Tell me that you love me and hold me close. Let my passing be gentle.

Always remember that I love you.

Dear Ferrets

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not switch positions with each other so there are still two ferrets in the way.

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food.

Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate of food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help, because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort.

Look at videos of ferrets sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible.

I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing but ferret sarcasm.

My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. In addition, I have been using bathrooms for years, ferret attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other ferrets butt. I cannot stress this enough. It would be such a simple change for you.

May I Go?

May I go now? Do you think the time is right? May I say good-bye to pain filled days and endless lonely nights?

I've lived my life and done my best, an example tried to be. So can I take that step beyond and set my spirit free?

I didn't want to go at first, I fought with all my might. But something seems to draw me now to a warm and loving light.

I want to go. I really do. It's difficult to stay. But I will try as best I can to live just one more day.

To give you time to care for me and share your love and fears. I know you're sad and afraid, because I see your tears.

I'll not be far, I promise that, and hope you'll always know that my spirit will be close to you wherever you may go.

Thank you so for loving me. You know I love you, too. That's why it's hard to say goodbye and end this life with you.

So hold me now just one more time and let me hear you say, because you care so much for me, you'll let me go today.

ODE TO A SHELTER MOM

Shelter Moms take to their hearts Those hungry, wondering strays. Those voiceless little creatures Someone else has thrown away.

They care for them, then give them love They hug them every day. But sometimes they're beyond her help And quietly slip away.

She keeps their little faces Tucked away deep in her heart. And one day many years from now From this world she will part.

You've heard the thunder in the skies While the sun is shining brightly. Or it may be in the winter When the snow is falling lightly.

That was not thunder that you heard But a thousand little feet. Running across the Rainbow Bridge Their shelter Mom to meet.

They rush into her waiting arms She hugs them everyone. While the world stands still and questions Why there's thunder with the sun

Christmas Song

Walking In A Weasel Wonderland

Ferrets dook are you listening in the hall poop is glistening a beautiful sound we're bouncing around walking in a weasel wonderland

Gone to play is the dooker here to stay is the snoozer we'll eat like a hog we'll torture the dog walking in a weasel wonderland

In the kitchen we can leave a land mine and make sure that it is chocolate brown you'll say "gonna get that?" I'll say "no man, lets watch the human slip then dance around!"

Later on we'll cause havock then we'll crash in our hammock to face unafraid the mess that we made walking in a weasel wonderland

In the litter we can do our buisness or thats what you'd really like to think that corner there is much more cozy at least we don't do our buisness in the sink

when it snows aint it thrilling though our paws gets a chilling we'll frolic and play the weasely way walking in a weasel wonderland

walking in a weasel wonderland
